Exotic heritage journeys
The colourful Ganges
Tune in to Channel 5 next Friday 26th April at 9pm to watch the first of a two-part Indian adventure which finds Jane amid the colourful chaos of the city of Kolkata, where she visits the largest flower market in Asia, before being treated to a ringside view of some traditional wrestlers in action. Jane then sets sail along the Ganges on board Heritage’s five-star ship the MV Ganges Voyager.
This river voyage reaches hidden corners along the Ganges where road access is almost impossible. Stop-offs include the temple city of Kalna and the former home of the historic East India Shipping Company, Murshidabad. While in Murshidabad, Jane explores the grand palaces of the city, before going off the beaten the track to see some local artisans at work.
The aim of Heritage River Journeys is to deliver a tourism experience that is of very high standard while minimising the environmental and social impact of tourism on the communities along the river. There is a crew of 35 on each vessel which maintains and services the ship and its passengers. The Ganges Voyager is an expedition river craft made entirely out of Burma teak and iron. It’s a floating 5-star hotel with 28 beautiful suites and interior décor reminiscent of the Raj, creating a colonial atmosphere for guests seeking out the Ganga for its famed mysticism and little explored beauty of eastern India.
